An example:
ERO TOURISM
Hypothesis - Discover a city while looking for love
Apparatus - A partner (lover or friend) and a destination
Method - Arrange to take a holiday with your partner. Travel there separately by different means and don't arrange a meeting time or place. Now look for each other.
OR
ALTERNATING TRAVEL
Hypothesis - Discover your own or a foreign town by following alternating travel directions
Apparatus - The ability to tell you left from your right
Method - Leave your home on foot. Take the first road on the right, then the next on the left, then the next on your right, then the next on the left and so on. Carry on until something - a no mans land, a building, a stretch of water -blocks your path and you can go no further.
Sounds a bit bizarre really, don't they? But I think it would be quite interesting to do.
These excerpts were taken from 'The Lonely Planets Guide to Experimental Travel'. The great thing about this book is that there are real life adventures from the people who have done these experiments and then documented it.
I quite like the idea as it allows you to explore your surrounding with no particular plan except to explore. I also like the idea of the last one, and taking photos of each time you take a left or right turn, what is there as you turn? So, one day when the weather is good, sun is up and Bean is in a good mood, I think we may go a-walking.
Only problem with something like this is, is it safe? It should be safe to go walking really, but with so much nonsense about, one does wonder...
I shall certainly let you know once I have done one of them... (they even have one where you spend 24 hours at the airport as a non traveler, picker upper of traveller, which personally, may be a good one to do at an overseas international airport but cannot imagine doing it at Cape Town International!)
