The Pixie Dust Conundrum

The age old question: ' What would you like Santa to bring you for Christmas?'

The answer from my 4 (almost 5 year old), 'Real Pixie Dust, Mom'.

It is the only thing she has asked for this year, which is great in one way yet rather unhelpful too. ( I did make her some pixie dust a little while ago, you know, with glitter in a lovely little glass bottle with a cork top- she was most dissapointed that it wasn't the real stuff...!)

I really want her to continue to believe in magic and fairies, and pixies and all those lovely things which just make up a childhood so I don't want to tell her that pixie dust is not real, and really who am I to say it isn't real? I may never have come across it IRL but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

So, I have decided that I will write a letter to her from a fairy/father Christmas as to why she hasn't got any 'real' pixie dust when it really is the only thing that she would like.

My question to you, is what do I tell her? I am stumped. I would like the answer to be believable but also so that she can pretend with the 'fake' pixie dust and still enjoy playing with it, even though it won't make her fly...

Help would be most appreciated!!!

I have some! I was given some as a gift a while ago and was going to stick it in their stocking. Two tiny little bottles - it is the 'real stuff'!

You mean - the real thing that will make her fly like a fairy? I think write a letter from Tinkerbell and let her see the movies, especially the last one - they clearly state how very precious pixie dut is and that only faeries should use it.

Ok, so i completely missed the flying bit!

i think that you should write her a letter (fromthe Head Fairy), as Cat says, and tell her that only some fairies get to fly, others get other special gifts - then mention what her special gift is (her kindness & loving & caring nature for example) but then give her some pixie dust which will make her be an even kinder person, for her to use when she feels she needs to help someone. What do you think?

This is such a sweet post. I love the idea of keeping the little ones believing in magic a bit longer. Great ideas for Cat and Shayne.
